Sustainability in a Museum Perspective
This report presents a double materiality assessment of the Danish museum sector using 14 ESG topics
to chart the sources of the negative impact museums can have on the environment, people and society.
Whilst some of the opportunities museums have to be a positive influence in advancing sustainability are
mentioned in the report, these are not its focus. Instead the report charts the negative impact of museums
in order to provide a qualified basis to support the strategic development of sustainability initiatives.
Upon reading this report, it should be clear that museums in general contribute with few material negative
impacts. Instead, museums face significant potential regarding their positive impacts.
The goal of the report is to provide museums with the knowledge they need to navigate the complex
landscape of sustainability. Our hope is that museums will be able to use the report as a launch pad
to establish ambitious sustainability goals and integrate sustainable practices in order to serve as role
models for their visitors and other institutions. -
Climate, social and economic sustainability: How do modern and contemporary art museums are responding to the Sustainable Development Goals?
Thanks to the collaboration of the 88 professionals from all
continents who took part in the survey launched in 2022,
CIMAM has updated its Toolkit on Sustainable Museum
Practices.
This comprehensive resource covers since May 2023 the
social and economic aspects of sustainability, combining advice
and real-world experience from museums around the world. It is
a practical international resource based on the principles of
human rights: equity, inclusion, diversity, justice, environmental
respect, and sustainable economic growth. Modern and
contemporary art museums can draw inspiration from this
valuable resource. -
